It is important for the contractor and the consumer to compare products with similar claims but the comparison needs to compare apples to apples. To simply look at similarities and then make a decision based on cost is not a valid comparison. Real variables exist. You need to take into consideration coverage rates, dry times and especially how effective is the product. There are also the hidden, below the surface variables. What about hidden costs? What about toxicity; is there a real danger in application? Is the product compatible with the conditions you will find on the job? What hoops do you have to jump through to maintain a warranty?
Two products, Anabec X-70 and Fiberlock 6100 make similar claims to ShieldAll 1020. In fact, there are similarities. However, the difference in the products is found in coverage rates. In direct comparison testing using the ASTM D 5590 test, ShieldAll significantly out performed Anabec X-70 and had similar results with Fiberlock. It is when you analyze ratings with coverage rates, that the real difference is found. Anabec X-70 claims coverage rates up to 1000 ft2/gal. In direct comparison with ShieldAll 1200, Anabec X-70 failed at 1000 ft2/gal. coverage rates. ShieldAll outperformed it in coverage and in rating.
In direct comparison with Fiberlock, again using the ASTM D 5590 test, ShieldAll and Fiberlock achieved 0 ratings, the best rating you can achieve in this particular test. Again, to see any significant difference, one needs to look at coverage rates. To achieve the zero rating, Fiberlock needed to be applied at 300 ft2/gal. ShieldAll was applied at 900 and 1500 ft2/gal. and achieved the 0 rating. With Fiberlock priced at nearly $300.00 per 5 gallon pail, significant cost savings are apparent when using ShieldAll.
ShieldAll 1020 is a non-toxic, anti-microbial primer that can be used on wood, wall board, concrete, OSB and other construction surfaces. It has outstanding adhesion so future blistering, peeling and chipping are eliminated. For interior applications, one coat is required although 2 coats should be used over bare wood. It penetrates surfaces easily strengthening and sealing porous and semi-porous surfaces. Overcoating ShieldAll 1020 is easy after 1 hour of dry time. It is non-toxic, cleans up like latex and is applied as easily as latex. No special training or special considerations are necessary for application. Normal caution should be used. Simply protect your eyes and skin from paint blowback. Finally, ShieldAll has a 0 fungal growth rating based on ASTM D 5590 testing, has outstanding coverage rates and is guaranteed for the life of the building. It is excellent for new construction but is also great for remediation and remodeling.
Anabec X-70 is priced at $231.00 to $255.00 per 5 gallon pail. It is dry to the touch in 2 hours however, it leaves a notable sheen so it is appropriate for only new building materials. It is also a 2 part system. Anabec’s Advanced Cleaning Solution must be used prior to applying X-70. However, Advanced Cleaning Solution is incompatible with Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride (CPVC) which is used in sprinkling systems and newer plumbing lines.
Anabec offers a multi-level warranty system. The 30 year warranty is only good if an independent environmental contractor takes the samples and submits them to an independent testing lab, a costly, time consuming venture. Contractors must go through contractor qualification which includes on-line training and worker application training.
Fiberlock IAQ 6100 can be purchased at around $300.00 per 5 gallon pail. It does achieve a 0 fungal growth ratio based on ASTM D 5590 testing, however that test result was based on a 300 ft2/gal. coverage rate. Fiberlock also has toxicity issues that are not found in the ShieldAll line. OSHA Hazard Communication Standard notes that Fiberlock IAQ 6100 has acute toxicity issues regarding inhalation of vapors and mists. It can also cause serious eye damage. Additionally, Fiberlock IAQ 6100 may require 2 coats for proper sealing and may require a primer over ferrous metal, wood or masonry block.
